How to Apply for Subsidies for Assistive Devices

Your Municipality Can Provide You with Assistive Devices

If you have a permanent physical or mental disability and need support in your daily life—whether at home or work—you can apply to your local municipality in Denmark for financial aid for assistive devices.

Your personal finances don't affect your eligibility for support.

The municipality assesses both your needs and the most suitable and cost-effective solution. While the support can be full, sometimes there's a required co-payment, depending on the product.

What Assistive Devices Can I Get Support For?

Assistive devices are products that compensate for reduced functionality, make daily activities easier, or increase your independence with a disability.

You can receive support for mobility aids like walkers, wheelchairs, and commode chairs, as well as smaller aids such as bath benches, grabbers, or elevated toilet seats. Other supported items include incontinence products, ostomy aids, ergonomic kitchen equipment, and bandages.

The municipality can either lend you the assistive device for free or provide a grant for you to purchase it yourself.

How to Apply for Assistive Devices from Your Municipality

You can apply for assistive devices online at borger.dk.

If you're unable to apply online, perhaps due to visual impairments or other issues, please contact your municipality for assistance.

It's important to apply before purchasing anything yourself, as the municipality must first assess your needs.

In your application, describe the challenges you face daily and how the assistive device can compensate for your functional impairment. The municipality might request additional documentation, such as medical or hospital records, if needed for their assessment.

You Can Freely Choose Your Supplier of Assistive Devices

When the municipality approves assistive devices, they opt for the least expensive solution that still meets your needs. This ensures you receive a functional and safe device, though it might not be the most expensive or advanced option.

Generally, based on your grant, you have the right to choose your supplier in line with free choice under Section 112 of the Social Services Act. This means you can select a device from a preferred supplier if you want a different model, color, or feature than the one offered by your municipality.

However, the municipality only subsidizes up to the amount they would have paid; if you choose a pricier product, you'll need to cover the price difference.
