Danes are taking a stand on inheritance distribution more than ever before

Recent figures from the Land Registration Court show a significant increase in the number of wills being created by Danes. In just two years, the number has doubled from nearly 51,000 in 2023 to just over 111,000 new wills in 2025. According to the legal advisory firm Replik, this remarkable rise is due in part to new family dynamics, such as blended families, greater awareness among young people, and an increasing number of older Danes.

An ever-growing number of Danes are choosing to think ahead about how their inheritance should be divided among their loved ones once they're no longer here.

Record Number of Wills in Denmark

New data from the Land Registration Court reveals that a record number of wills were created in Denmark in 2025. In total, 111,062 wills were drawn up last year, compared to 50,799 in 2023 and 86,593 in 2024. This more than doubling of the number of wills in just two years suggests a fundamental shift in how Danes approach inheritance and family matters, according to the legal advisory firm Replik.

"We see that many more Danes today view creating a will as an active decision, rather than something to be postponed until the very end of life. It's largely about making timely decisions to ensure that your inheritance is distributed according to your wishes," explains Chief Legal Officer Katrine Lindgaard Pedersen from Replik. "Particularly when family relationships are more complex than in the past."

"Broadly speaking, as the population ages, more people are contemplating the day they won't be here. It's my assessment that more people now prioritize managing their estate responsibly," adds the chief legal officer as she discusses the reasons behind this explosive trend.

"It's largely about making timely decisions to ensure that your inheritance is distributed according to your wishes, especially as family dynamics become more complex."

Reasons for the Surge in Wills

One key reason for this development is that the default rules of inheritance law don't always fit new and modern family setups, such as blended families, divorces, and stepchildren. In these cases, a will can be crucial to ensure the desired distribution.

"In many modern families, the inheritance is automatically divided according to inheritance law if there's no will in place. This means, for instance, that unmarried partners don't inherit from each other, and stepchildren are entitled to their share of the inheritance immediately. Many families find this surprising, and without a will, it can have significant financial consequences for the surviving family," says Chief Legal Officer Katrine Lindgaard Pedersen from Replik, adding further insights:

"We also notice that many younger adults are becoming aware of the need to have a will when they have children, buy a home, or are in a partnership without being married. In these situations, a will can be quite crucial for protecting the surviving partner and ensuring they can remain in, for example, their home and manage the other financial responsibilities often left behind in a family."

Katrine Lindgaard Pedersen also points to an increase in awareness about inheritance rules and the potential of wills as an explanation for the noticeable upward trend. TV shows about inheritance conflicts and other media coverage have helped more Danes become aware of the consequences of not making a decision.

"Today, a will is no longer just a dusty document considered at the last moment. For many, it serves as a form of legal insurance, much like common insurance policies, providing peace of mind and ensuring the family is cared for if the unexpected happens. We anticipate this trend will continue in the coming years," concludes the chief legal officer.
