Rollator Guide: Which Rollator Should I Choose?

Looking for a new rollator? It can be quite a task to decide which one is right for you given all the options out there. Here's a straightforward guide to help you focus on what to look for when choosing the perfect rollator for your needs.

Should your rollator be for indoor or outdoor use?

Rollators generally fall into three categories: indoor, outdoor, and combo-rollators, which are suitable for both settings.

An indoor rollator is, as the name suggests, designed for use inside the home. It's narrower with smaller wheels, making it easier to maneuver indoors. An indoor rollator typically comes equipped with a tray for dining and a small basket to carry essential items like reading glasses and keys.

An outdoor rollator is more stable with larger, softer wheels for navigating forest paths, cobblestones, and other uneven surfaces outdoors. Some even feature extra-soft or air-filled tires for added shock absorption. Outdoor rollators often include a seat, allowing you to take a break whenever needed.

A combo rollator is a happy medium between the two and the most popular choice. It's an outdoor rollator that can also work just fine indoors. While rollators are generally designed for both uses, make sure your choice isn't too wide for the door frames in your home. This is rare but can be an issue, especially in older homes.

Whether you're looking for an indoor rollator, a classic combo-rollator, or an outdoor model, you'll find it at Seniorshop. Explore our full range here.

What should your rollator weigh?

Rollators weigh between approximately 13 kg and as little as 5 kg. Generally, the lighter the rollator, the higher the price because lightweight models need to be as strong and stable as their heavier counterparts.

The weight matters if you need to lift your rollator up stairs, into a car, or over a curb. A lightweight rollator is much easier to handle daily, and it's especially convenient if you're not as strong as you used to be.

Should your rollator be foldable?

Almost all rollators can be folded, significantly reducing their size, but the folding mechanism can vary greatly.

Here are two methods illustrated below.

The first method (1), often seen on cheaper models, involves a "vertical folding," where the front folds into the back. The downside is it can't stand on its own when folded, and you need to remove the basket and tray beforehand.

The second method (2), common on pricier models, is a "horizontal folding," where the sides come together like an accordion. This allows the rollator to stand alone when folded, and neither the basket nor the seat needs to be removed because they're designed to fold in as well.
